In the aftermath of events on Grounds and in Charlottesville during the weekend of August 11, we want to reassure all UVA Health System supporters, alumni, colleagues, volunteers, and friends that we still stand strong—and more committed than ever to advancing a culture of respect, equity, diversity, and inclusiveness. We will not let violence initiated by extremist groups define or divide us. This is a place of healing, learning, and discovery. We will continue to do what we do well—focus on improving how we treat, cure, and prevent illness. And, we will continue to do so in an environment that celebrates diversity, where every individual is deserving of respect.

Our thoughts remain with the people who were injured or died that terrible weekend—and with the families and friends who love them. We all mourn this tragedy. For those who came to us for care, we are deeply grateful to our UVA Health System family for their professional response and clear dedication to their patients. These events placed exceptional demands on our caregivers, and their time, spirit, and expertise were integral to starting the healing process. This demonstration of strength and collaboration in the face of crisis is a source of pride for our entire institution.

Doubtless, the healing, both physical and emotional, will continue for some time. Our resolve remains strong. We will persevere, come together, learn, and do our work with focus and renewed determination.

We thank all of those who have reached out to us with support and concern. Together, we will move beyond these tragic events and continue to grow stronger. Thank you for your partnership and for your continued commitment to our work.
